Welcome to Unit 3 - Nutrition and Feeding Practice in Preterm Infants
Units 1 and 2 of this module cover the important role that optimal nutrition plays for the long-term health of preterm infants, and review the special nutritional requirements of preterm infants. This unit focuses on the practical aspects of ensuring optimal nutritional care for preterm infants. Areas addressed include: the use of established and standardized nutritional protocols; the initiation of parenteral nutrition and the transition to full enteral feeds; monitoring growth; co-morbidities of prematurity that impact nutritional management; the provision of nutrition to preterm infants in areas with limited healthcare resources; the ways to plan for a successful discharge to home after weeks to months of care in the NICU; and the use of nutritional supplements following discharge.
